Physical Therapy has become an ever-expanding part of the medical field that helps millions of people a day recover from illness or injury to get back to their desired level of functioning. The problem with physical therapy is that the differences and treatment approaches amongst physical therapists vary greatly. The training and skills of two well-educated, trained therapists can be completely different. Because of this, people’s experiences and the effectiveness of the treatments they receive vary greatly.
A person can go to one physical therapist for a particular condition such as low back pain, and receive 10 treatments that produce no significant benefit for the patient. That same patient can then see another physical therapist for the same condition and have the pain completely eliminated and their functional abilities totally restored. Why is this? The person saw a licensed physical therapist at both clinics, they had no significant results at one clinic, and complete resolution of the condition at the other. The answer lays in the treatment philosophy and training of the therapist.
All physical therapists graduate from accredited colleges and universities with Masters degrees, and often times Doctorate degrees, in the physical therapy field. They are then required to take and pass a national examination to assure a certain amount of knowledge within the field. Where the differences begin to occur are after graduation and licensure. Physical therapists in the State of Ohio are required by law to complete 24 hours of continuing education every two years to maintain an active license as a physical therapist. However, it is up to the individual therapist what courses they attend, and what content is being taught in those courses.
As in most aspects of learning there are those things that evoke a high level of thought and develop a high level of understanding, and there are those that meet a requirement without accomplishing much. Continuing education for physical therapists fits in this mold. There are those therapists that want to become better physical therapists and follow a course of study to accomplish that, and there are those that go the easiest route possible just to meet the 24-hour continuing education requirement. There are also those overachievers who have a thirst for knowledge, and crave a more thorough understanding of injury and disease and how to help people recover from these events. These people often exceed the state standards for 24 hours of continuing education because they are more interested in learning. They often pay for the courses out of their own pocket to become better at their profession. These are the difference-makers as physical therapists. These are the physical therapists that achieve outcomes and have a justified patient following. These are the therapists that help people get better and will have return patients as future injuries occur because patients have the utmost confidence in the therapist’s abilities to help them recover. These are the physical therapists that most people who have undergone physical therapy have NOT seen. These physical therapists are the elite in their field and are NOT common.
One of these physical therapists is Dr. Thomas Hallett, PT, DPT, Cert MDT, CKTP. Thomas is the Chief Clinical Therapist for ProHealth Partners Inc. He sees outpatients at ProHealth Partners, Inc. located in the Regency Court location in Toledo, Ohio, Monday through Friday. Thomas has a Doctorate degree in Physical Therapy from Temple University in Philadelphia. He has hundreds of hours of continuing education from around the world that has achieved him several specialty certifications. Thomas often hears comments from patients stating “I have never had any physical therapy like this before” and I never thought I’d feel this good; I’m better than before I was injured.” Thomas has combined the best, most research-based and most outcome-producing treatment philosophies into his own method which is appropriately named the Multi-System Approach. ProHealth Partners, Inc. is the exclusive provider of the Multi-System Approach, which has a unique battery of tests and algorithms that help determine the primary problem along with the secondary contributors. With this knowledge treatment can be focused to rehabilitate the primary problem, while the secondary contributors are addressed for symptom management. This Multi-System Approach addresses patient’s injuries holistically to manage the entire condition. This method has proven to be extremely effective, producing outcomes that are rarely seen on such a consistent basis.
